Remembering Brendan

Brendan Herbert

(1969-2006)

Brendan Herbert was born in Rathnamagh in 1969. He was educated at St Patrick’s National School Rathnamagh and after in St.Tiernan’s Vocational School, Crossmolina. Brendan represented St Tiernan’s at all levels and went on to become a member of the Mayo vocational schools panel. After his leaving certificate he joined Hollister in Ballina in 1987 and worked as an apprentice fitter. Brendan was a diligent employee and was well respected by all his co-workers.

He played at all levels with Ardagh GAA from an early age and started playing with the junior team at 16. Brendan was a versatile player and played in many positions. He was an accurate free taker and was often on the score sheet. He played during a very competitive era, when Ardagh GAA were a formidable force at junior level. In 1994 Ardagh captured the Division 4 title, where Brendan played Right half back. A first county title for the club. The following years Ardagh won The North Mayo Winter League and North Mayo Junior Exclusive Cup of which Brendan was a team member. The North Mayo Championship eluded them however, after many attempts, non more than the North Mayo final in 1997 against neighbours Crossmolina.

Brendan was a proud member of Ardagh GAA Club and also trained some underage teams , one of which won the under 12 North Mayo Final in 1990.

Brendan was also a keen Mayo follower and often made the long trip to Croke Park to support the Senior football team.
